ASI Celebrates National Trails Day

On June 4, Align Southern Indiana (ASI) celebrated National Trails Day, which is held nationally on the first Saturday of June each year, by organizing two local events aimed at advocacy and trail service to help connect area residents with others who share a love of the outdoors.

The events took place in Clark and Harrison counties in Southern Indiana and featured fun for the whole family. Encouraged by the American Hiking Society, the purpose of these events is to build local community and join the nationwide movement to enhance our area’s trails, ensuring everyone can enjoy the outdoors.

“Having this outdoor opportunity for our area is crucial for not only building a sense of community, but also improving the quality of life for our Southern Indiana residents,” said Rita Shourds, President and CEO of Align Southern Indiana. “National Trails Day is the perfect opportunity to get out there with the people you love, give back to the trails that bring us together, and make sure no one is left out.”

Medline Industries, a medical equipment supplier located in Jeffersonville, acted as the sponsor for the event, providing 100 water bottles to the first 100 people at both event sites.

In Clark County, representatives from Jeffersonville, Clarksville Parks Department, and the Falls of the Ohio Foundation hosted an information booth on the Ohio River Greenway from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. Set up near the Falls of the Ohio Interpretive Center, the representatives handed out information on local parks and trails, as well as gave away some trail swag from Medline.

Using Indian Creek Trail, which is a three-mile paved path featuring historic truss bridges that follows Indian Creek from Hayswood Nature Reserve through downtown Corydon to the YMCA, representatives from Indian Creek Trail, Inc. hosted a trail celebration near the midpoint of the path. Participants picked up trail bingo cards and other giveaway items, in addition to being entered in a drawing for several nature books. To help attract more visitors, the Bingo cards were available in both English and Spanish.
